A Motherboard ( sometimes alternatively known as mainboard, system board, planar board, or logic board ) is the main printed circuits board found in computers and many expandable systems. It allows and holds all communications between all computer components of a system, such as the central processing unit ( CPU ) and Memory ( RAM ), or peripherals devices , a motherboard contains significant sub-systems such as processor and other components.
Motherboard specially refers to a PCB ( Printed Circuit Board) with expansion capabilities and as the name suggests, this board is the " Mother " of all components which are attached to it. such as Printers, Usb Devices, Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Video Cards, Network Cards, DVD-ROM, and all other components.
Motherboard Basically Includes
- Sockets or Slots in which one or more microprocessors may be installed.
- Slots into which the main memory is installed.
- A Chipset which forms an interface between CPU, Main Memory and Peripheral Devices.
- Non-Volatile-Memory Chips.
- A Clock Generator Which produce the system clock signals.
- Slots for Expansion Cards.
- Connectors for Hard Drives, typically SATA only.
